Honouring the Women Who Keep Lagos Clean: A Rest & Relaxation Day with LAWMA Sweepers
On Saturday, May 10, 2025, the Glo Foundation partnered with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to host a Rest & Relaxation event in honour of 1,000 street sweepers. Held at LAWMA’s Iddo Yard in Ijora Olopa, the event was a vibrant celebration of service, resilience, and humanity. From the early hours, it was clear this day was different. The women arrived not in uniforms, but in their Sunday best — ready not for work, but for joy. For once, they weren’t behind the scenes of Lagos’ movement. They were front and center — celebrated as the guests of honour.
The event was created to give these essential workers something they rarely receive: a chance to rest, be recognised, and be cared for. The day unfolded with music, dancing, games, heartfelt speeches, and shared laughter. There were interviews that captured their untold stories and raffle draws with livelihood-boosting prizes like sewing and grinding machines and microwaves — turning celebration into opportunity. A standout moment came when the Foundation announced a four-week skill acquisition programme for 200 workers or their dependents, covering bead making, fashion design, digital skills, and more. For many, it was a break from routine. For others, it was the start of something new — a chance to grow, thrive, and be seen beyond the orange uniforms.
Throughout the event, thoughtful details stood out — from a curated playlist to a generous buffet. A variety of delicious dishes and drinks were served, shared over laughter and conversation. As one woman said, “I’ve been doing this job for 15 years. This is the first time anyone has said ‘Thank you’ like this.”

To further support their daily work, new overalls, raincoats and work tools were distributed a gesture that reinforced both appreciation and practical care. The day closed with every guest receiving a generous food box, carefully packed to support their households a reminder that gratitude is best expressed through action.
At Glo Foundation, we believe impact begins with being seen. This day wasn’t just a celebration it was a statement. One that says: the hands that build this city matter, and they deserve to be honoured.
